VALO-luokkien kuulumisia poikkeusajalta

VALO-luokkien (perusopetukseen valmistavien luokkien) lukuvuosi 2020-2021 on näyttänyt erilaiselta moneen edelliseen vuoteen verrattuna, vaikka oppilaat ovat päässeet nyt syksyllä opiskelemaan lähiopetuksessa. 

The VALO preparatory classes’ 2020-2021 school year has looked different compared to past years, though the students have been able to study in person this fall. 

Poikkeusaika on tuonut uusia käytänteitä jokaisen Valo-oppilaan koulupäivään, esimerkiksi käsienpesua aina ulos mentäessä ja sisälle tultaessa. Yli 12-vuotiaat oppilaat käyttävät kiihtymisvaiheen alettua hengityssuojaimia. Myös nuoremmat oppilaat joutuvat käyttämään hengityssuojainta, mikäli opiskelevat yhdysluokassa 12-vuotiaiden kanssa tai kulkevat koulubussilla yhteiskuljetuksessa isompien oppilaiden kanssa.

The lockdown has brought new routines to every student’s school day, such as hand washing when coming in and out of school. Students that are over 12 years old have worn masks since the acceleration stage began. Younger students have also had to wear masks if they are in a combined class with 12-year-olds or use the school bus with older students. 

Opettajatkin käyttävät maskia, mutta saattavat vaihtaa välillä opetustilanteessa maskin visiiriin. Visiiri mahdollistaa opettajan suun liikkeiden näkemisen, mikä voi helpottaa suomen kielen oppimista. Opettajien on vaikeampaa kuulla lasten puhetta maskien takaa, tämä haastaa erityisesti esimerkiksi kielioppitunneilla. 

The teachers also wear masks, but they may switch to visors when teaching. The visor lets the students see how the teacher’s mouth moves, which helps with learning Finnish. The teachers have 

trouble hearing the students clearly because of the students’ masks; this creates a new challenge 

especially during grammar lessons. 

Koulunkäyntiä on haastanut myös se, että pienenkin flunssan oireen ilmaantuessa oppilas joutuu jäämään kotiin. Opettajat ovat kuitenkin kiitollisia että vanhemmat ovat osanneet toimia sairastumistilanteessa oikein.

School attendance has also been affected by the way that a student must stay at home even due to

minor cold symptoms. The teachers are grateful, though, that parents have been able to act correctly

when a student gets sick. 

Yksi Valo-luokan opettajista kehuu oppilaiden joustavuutta poikkeusaikana. Pandemian alussa lapset olivat pelokkaampia, mutta nyt poikkeusajasta on tullut uusi normaali. 
One of the preparatory class teachers praises the students’ flexibility during the lockdown. The children were more afraid at 
the beginning of the pandemic, but now the lockdown has become the new normal. 

VALO-opiskelijoiden integroimista normaaliopetukseen on myös pohdittu, sillä kontaktia muihin oppilaisiin halutaan minimoida. Kuitenkin integrointi on pystytty järjestämään. VALO-luokkalaisia osallistuu perusopetuksen käsityö- ja liikuntatunneille, sekä englannin tunneille. Oppilaat ovat myös päässeet käymään kouluvierailuilla, ajan luonteesta huolimatta. Olemme myös saaneet toivottaa uusia oppilaita tervetulleeksi koko syksyn ja alkukevään ajan. Poikkeusolot eivät ole vaikuttaneet VALO-luokkien oppilasmääriin, oppilaita on tullut jatkuvasti lisää eri valo-ryhmiin.

The students' integration into the normal classes has been considered carefully, as contact with other classes should be reduced. Thankfully, integrated classes have been possible to arrange. The students

participate in handicraft, physical education and English classes with Finnish students, and they have been able to go on field trips despite the current situation. We have also welcomed new students during the fall and early spring. The lockdown has not affected in the amount of students attending the VALO classes; new students have joined the different VALO groups throughout the school year. 

Vaikka tällä hetkellä lähiopetus on onnistunut, opettajat ovat valmistautuneet mahdolliseen etäopetukseen tulevaisuudessa. Opettajat ovat tutustuttaneet oppilaat erilaisiin etäopetusvälineiden ja -ohjelmien käyttöön, sekä antaneet jo varalle tehtäviä ja opetusmateriaaleja valmiiksi oppilaille kotiin. 

Though in-person teaching has been possible for now, teachers are prepared for possible distance 

teaching in the future. The teachers have prepared the students for distance learning, and they have 

given teaching materials and activities for the students to use at home. 

Myös VALO-opetuksen teatteritunnit ovat jatkuneet perjantaisin turvavälit ja muut turvallisuusohjeet huomioiden. Iloinen tunnelma ja oppimisen riemu välittyvät edelleen VALO-luokkien oppilaista  eri oppitunneilla. Sama tarttuva innostus ja iloitseminen näistä monista oppimisen hetkistä, uusien sanojen tarttumisesta kommunikointiin ja oppilaiden sanavaraston karttumisesta välittyy myös opettajien visiirien takaa.

The VALO
theater classes have continued on Fridays with social distancing and other safety precautions taken into account. The students' joy and excitement continues to show during different classes. The same contagious enthusiasm and joy from these many moments of learning, the use of new words in communication and the accumulation of students’ vocabulary can be seen even from behind the teachers’ visors.
